Why is Mac OSX 10.6.8 not supported with Symphony ThunderBridge

The minimum OSX version supported for ThunderBridge is 10.7.5, During development many unsolvable issues unique to 10.6.8 and ThunderBolt were encountered, it was determined that the vast majority of people purchasing Apple’s new Thunderbolt equipped MacBooks and iMacs would not choose to run 10.6.8.

Step by Step instructions to record with the Maestro low latency mixer
1. Configure your software application for use with an external low latency mixer. For example , in Logic Pro uncheck the Software Monitoring box (Logic Pro > Preferences > Audio) so that when a track is in record, audio output is muted from Logic. Thus, only audio through the low latency mixer is heard.

1. Set the software application’s mixer output to Out 1-2.
2. In the Maestro Output Routing tab window, assign Mixer 1 to hardware output Line 1/2, Mixer 2 to hardware output Line 3/4.

3. In the Output tab window, assign Headphone 1 to Line 1-2, Headphone 2 to Line 3-4

4. In the Mixer tab window, set the Software Return drop down menu to 1-2 and set both the Software Return and Mixer Master faders to 0.
5. In your software application, play back the session. You should hear playback in headphones connected to Symphony I/O’s HP 1 and HP 2 outputs. Next, create a suitable mix of playback tracks. In this example, both Mixer 1 and 2 are in use, but under many circumstances only one mixer is necessary.
6. Connect the signal to be recorded to Symphony I/O’s Line In 1 – the signal level will appear in the Mixers’ Line 1 meter.
7. Raise the Line 1 fader to create a monitor mix of the input and playback signals.
8. Record!

Symphony I/O Firmware Updater stuck, hung, frozen at 4%

On some USB 3.0 equipped Macs, the Firmware Updater will freeze at 4% and never complete the update.

To work around this, you need to use a USB 2.0 port. This can be a USB 2.0 port on a peripheral hub, Apple keyboard, or monitor display.

 

Here are some steps to try to update your Symphony I/O:

1. Quit the Firmware Updater and power down the Symphony I/O

2. Connect the Mac side of the supplied Apogee USB Cable to a USB port on a monitor display, Apple keyboard, or external USB Hub

3. Power on Symphony I/O and run Firmware Updater ( be patient it can take up to 5 minutes to complete )

4. If your Mac does not have a peripheral connected that has a a spare USB port then you can also do the Firmware update from an older Mac with USB 2.0 as a last resort

Will Apogee USB interfaces work with USB 3.0 ports on my Mac?

Yes, Apogee interfaces including JAM, JAM 96k, MiC, MiC 96k, GiO, Groove, Duet 2, Duet for iPad & Mac, ONE, ONE for iPad & Mac, Quartet, and Symphony I/O have been tested and work well with USB 3.0 ports.

Note-

Although Symphony I/O works as an audio interface with USB 3.0 ports, you will need to use a USB 2.0 port or a USB hub to run the Symphony I/O firmware updater.

How do I know what version of Maestro is installed on my Mac?

To find out what version of Maestro you have installed:
  • Open Maestro 2 (found in your Mac’s application folder) and click on the “Apogee Maestro 2″ menu in the upper left-hand corner of the desktop menu bar
  • select “About Maestro 2″. This will bring up a window showing you which version you have installed (see example below)

Symphony Audio Interface Mode

Requirements to connect Symphony I/O to Apogee Symphony 64 or Mobile PCI cards:

  • Apogee Symphony 64 Thunderbridge or Symphony 64 PCIe card (sold separately)
  • OS X 10.8.5, 10.9.5, and 10.10 and higher (64-bit and 32-bit kernel modes)
  • 2GB memory required, 4 GB recommended

 

Pro Tools HD Audio Interface Mode

A Symphony I/O based Pro Tools system consists of two independent computer connections: audio (to a Pro Tools HD PCI card) and software control (via USB to an Intel Mac running Maestro 2). In the case where PCI cards are installed in a PowerPC Mac or Windows computer, it’s possible to run Maestro from a separate Intel Mac, such as Mac Mini or MacBook.

Note:

Running Symphony I/O in Pro Tools HD mode on a PowerPC Mac requires an older firmware version. You can request this older firmware by emailing: betafeedback@apogeedigital.com. Only the 8×8, 16 Analog In/Digital Out, and 16 Digital In/Analog Out modules are compatible with versions of Pro Tools HD older than version 9. The 16×16 Analog In/Out and 2×6 modules are only compatible with Pro Tools HD versions 9 and above.

 

Requirements to connect Symphony I/O to Avid Pro Tools PCI Cards:

  • Avid Pro Tools HDX, HD Native or HD Core/Accel/Process card installed in a computer in accordance with the Pro Tools HD Compatibility Grids, available at www.avid.com
  • Pro Tools 8.1 (requires older Symphony I/O firmware), 9.0 or greater, 10.0 or greater, 11.0 or greater

Requirements to run Apogee Maestro software, to control Symphony I/O via USB:

  • OS X 10.8.5, 10.9.5, and 10.10 and higher (64-bit and 32-bit kernel modes)
  • Apple Intel Mac

USB Audio Interface Mode

 

Requirements to connect Symphony I/O as a USB audio interface:

  • OS X 10.8.5, 10.9.5, and 10.10 and higher (64-bit and 32-bit kernel modes)
  • Apple Intel Mac – 2GB memory required, 4 GB recommended

 

Standalone Audio Interface Mode

In Standalone audio interface mode, all audio connections are made using the standard analog and digital i/o found on the I/O Module(s). For software control, connects Symphony I/O’s USB port to a Mac.
